Shaker Filter and Waste Storage combine in the DCS Mini Silo Filter Package

Dust Control Systems has worked with South Yorkshire-based joinery manufacturer GD Woodworking for many years and, when the company decided to invest in a state-of-the-art CNC machining centre, managing director Glyn Ducker had no hesitation in contacting Chris Oldfield of DCS to recommend the best solution for extracting woodwaste from the high performance machine.

Since GD Woodworking began operating in the mid 1980s it has built an enviable reputation for producing high quality windows, doors and stairs, primarily serving the home building and social housing sector. The business, located on the Barbot Hall industrial estate in Rotherham, employs around 40 people in an atmosphere that can only be described as ‘homely’. It is truly a family business with Glyn and his wife Lynn, together with their sons Sales Director Andrew, Mark and daughter Nichola, all involved in the day-to-day running of the company.

With 26,500 sq ft of manufacturing and raw material storage the company is geared towards efficient manufacturing, whilst maintaining and ensuring the quality of their products. The modern, well-equipped workshop also includes a double-vacuum pressure impregnation plant, spray booth and trolley racked drying system.

“Flexibility and quality are key to our success”, says Glyn Ducker. “We have standard products but we are happy to adapt them, or customise doors and windows, to satisfy the needs of our clients. We consider every job to be a piece of furniture; our windows and pre-hung doorsets, for instance, leave the factory with three coats of paint or stain, fully glazed and beaded.”

“We purchased the new Homag BOF 211 machining centre exclusively for stair production. When considering extraction for the machine we knew that our existing dust plant, sited at the other end of the workshop, could not be utilised and we didn’t want an internally-sited unit.”
Chris Oldfield explains: “The machining centre called for a duty of 6,200m3/hr and, with GD Woodworking wanting the waste to be directly transported to their existing waste transfer system, and with very limited space outside the workshop to house a filter, the obvious solution came in the shape of one of our latest Mini Silo Shaker Filters.”

The ATEX certified shaker package is somewhat unique in the UK in that it incorporates 7.5m3 of built-in waste storage, includes a rotating emptying device, dry riser for fire quenching and 11kW high performance fan. At GD Woodworking the unit fits perfectly into a small corner space and is effectively dealing with dust and chips. Filtered waste is discharged from the integral silo, pressure-free, into the company’s open waste transfer system.
