When leading office furniture manufacturer De Novo Interiors Ltd. decided to invest in new panel processing facilities as part of their expansion programme, they contacted Dust Control Systems to discuss their dust extraction requirements.

De Novo Interiors manufacture contract office furniture systems for the wholesale office equipment distribution market, and also supply a comprehensive range of office furniture under their own Bluespot Furniture Systems brand name. They are bucking current industry trends by reporting increased sales figures and have also announced plans to further expand their West Yorkshire manufacturing operations. Much of De Novo Interiors’ success is due to their continual investment in panel processing technology combined with a philosophy of offering uncomplicated, value-for-money products, manufactured to the highest standards, and backed by outstanding customer service. With over 750 product lines available from stock, the company boasts an impressive ‘fast-track’ service that offers customers a 7-day turnaround on most product lines.

Andrew Cooper, Operations Director at De Novo Interiors, comments: “We use DCS for maintenance and scheduled testing of our existing dust extraction plant, and have always been happy with their responsiveness and the level of service provided. DCS were a logical choice when we were planning our additional manufacturing facilities; with their proven track record, we were confident to approach them to design and specify a complete, dedicated system that would best deal with the dust from the new line.”

After considering all De Novo’s requirements, and carrying out a thorough on-site assessment, DCS engineers proposed an externally located bag filter plant, utilising a low-noise 22kW fan unit. The new production facilities, which includes the latest CNC panel processing centre, edgebander and sliding table saw, required an air volume of around 10,000m3/hr to effectively extract the dust and chips created by the three machines.

DCS installed an ATEX certified modular filter system, with quick-release galvanised waste collection bins underneath each filter section. Operated by a single control panel, the system incorporates a unique filter media which provides low pressure drop, giving low energy consumption and improved filtering efficiency. Programmed, on-line cleaning of the filter media is performed by reverse air flow, achieved by regeneration fans fitted at the clean air discharge. Galvanised, quick-fit ductwork was installed throughout, and includes droppers with blast gate dampers to each machine.

Once the specification was agreed, DCS engineers completed the installation and commissioned the new plant within the required timescales and, Mr Cooper adds, “...as a company, DCS are accessible, constructive and extremely flexible – we are very impressed with both the system and with the way DCS managed the contract.” The installation has also been designed to be readily adapted to facilitate re-circulation of the warm, filtered air back into the workshop to provide additional winter heating which is planned as part of De Novo’s new extension to be completed later this year.
