A compact modular filter from Dust Control Systems deals with dust at Brookhouse Tooling.

Ground Support Equipment components produced from models and moulds manufactured in Brookhouse Tooling’s pattern shop.

Brookhouse Tooling Ltd., based in Darwen, Lancashire, is part of the Brookhouse Group – the UK's leading independent supplier to the aerospace industry with acknowledged expertise in the design and manufacture of composite aero-structures and composite tooling and ground support equipment.

At the group's extensive Darwen facility, the tooling workshop manufactures precision tooling, ranging from composite drill and router tools to sophisticated metal CNC-machined mould tools, along with general jigs and fixtures. In addition, there is a dedicated area for the production of large tooling jigs, including the specialised fabrication of major aircraft assembly jigs.

When Brookhouse Tooling decided to upgrade its existing dust extraction plant, by installing a dedicated system to serve the pattern and moulds section, Dust Control Systems Ltd were invited to discuss the company’s changing requirements and recommend an effective solution. The workshop, which utilises a variety of classical woodworking machines, including double head sanders, bandsaws and jig borers, required a total air volume of around 7,000m3/hr to effectively extract the wood and composite dust generated.

Following a thorough evaluation of Brookhouse’s site and production facilities, DCS engineers proposed an additional externally located filter, utilising a direct-driven 7.5kW fan unit. They installed an ATEX-certified modular shaker filter system, with quick-release galvanised waste collection bins. And, thanks to a unique filter media that provides improved filtering efficiency and low energy consumption, together with a low-noise fanset that consumes 30% less energy than traditional fans, the system provides effective extraction, is quiet in operation and extremely economical to run.

Steve Thomas, who heads up production at Brookhouse Tooling, says: “The new dust plant was installed with minimal disruption to production, and we are very pleased with the performance; it’s a robust and well-engineered system which satisfies the demands of our busy pattern shop, and fully meets our requirement for an efficient and inherently safe system.”
