What is
COSHH?
COSHH
testing for users of dust and fume
extraction is sometimes known as LEV
(Local Exhaust Ventilation) testing.
It is part of an overall appraisal required by
the Health & Safety Executive on hazardous
substances within the workplace.
This appraisal includes a full assessment
of all potentially hazardous materials and
an evaluation of the control methods in
place to prevent exposure.
Why do you
need to do it?
Dust and fumes can enter the
body through inhalation or ingestion causing occupational
asthma and dermatitis. Some substances can even have serious
effects on the liver, kidneys or central nervous system.
One of the methods of averting such exposure is by installing
a properly designed and maintained LEV system.
Part of your responsibility
in complying with COSHH regulations is to ensure LEV systems
are working correctly and that they are tested and maintained.
If you employ more than five people you must document
this testing for future reference. Usually these tests
are required every 14 months but can be more frequent!
